Ponniyin Selvan: II is a series of epic historical action adventure movies in Tamil that were written by Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan and are directed by Mani Ratnam. They are the film versions of Ponniyin Selvan, a 1955 book by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which Ratnam and Subaskaran Allirajah produced through Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.

Since its release, various Tamil filmmakers have considered making a movie based on the book Ponniyin Selvan. M. G. Ramachandran even made an attempt in the late 1950s, but the project was never completed due to lack of funding. Ratnam made unsuccessful attempts to adapt the book decades later, in the late 1980s and the early 2010s. 

Once Lyca decided to bankroll the movie, Ratnam resurrected the project in January 2019 and referred to it as his "dream project." Ponniyin Selvan's production halted twice because to the COVID-19 pandemic between 11 December 2019 and 18 September 2021 after a number of cast and staff changes. 

Both movies were shot back-to-back in different parts of India, with a few scenes also being shot in Thailand.

As per report of BackToBollywood, Ponniyin Selvan was originally planned as a single film with a huge budet of ₹500 crore (US$63 million). But due to very large duration of the movie it is made in 2 parts, Ponniyin Selvan 1 ( PS-1) & Ponniyin Selvan 2 ( PS-2 ). And the budget allocated was also split in 2 part.
